Privacy and your data

BuiltFrom asks you for a resume, which is one of the more personal documents most people own. Here is exactly what happens to it.

This describes how the product works today, during its first pilot. It is a plain description, not a legal document.

Your original file never leaves your device

When you upload a PDF, Word document or text file, it is opened and read in your own browser. The file itself is never sent to BuiltFrom, and there is nowhere on our side that could receive one — no file storage exists in this product.

What gets saved is the text that reading produced, and only after you have seen it on screen and chosen to save it. You can correct that text before saving; afterwards it is kept exactly as you approved it, so that every piece of experience can always be checked back against it.

What BuiltFrom stores

  • Your email address, from signing in.
  • The resume text you approved, and the documents you named.
  • The pieces of experience you saved, whether or not you confirmed them.
  • Job descriptions you pasted in, and the resumes you built.
  • The contact details you enter for a resume — your name, email, phone, location, links.

It is held in Google Firebase (Firestore), in the United States, under rules that allow each account to read and write only its own data. Nobody else using BuiltFrom can reach your information.

The owner of BuiltFrom has administrative access to the underlying database, as the operator of any small service does. Your data is not sold, shared with advertisers, or used to train anything.

When AI is involved, and what it is sent

Nothing is sent anywhere automatically. AI is used at exactly one moment: when you press Find possible experience on a document you imported. At that point the text of that document is sent to our AI provider, OpenAI, so it can point at the passages that look like accomplishments.

It is sent the document text and nothing else. Not your email, not your name, not your other documents, not your jobs, not your saved experience.

The model is only allowed to point at passages and suggest a short label. It cannot write your evidence: the text of every piece of experience is cut from your own stored document by BuiltFrom, not produced by the model. Suggestions arrive marked Needs confirmation and stay that way until you read and confirm them yourself.

What OpenAI does with it

  • OpenAI states that data sent to its API is not used to train or improve its models unless you explicitly opt in to share it. BuiltFrom has not opted in — every data-sharing setting on our OpenAI project is switched off.
  • We ask OpenAI not to retain the request or response, on every single call.
  • OpenAI nevertheless keeps its own abuse-monitoring logs, which can contain the text sent, and by default retains them for up to 30 days. The stricter zero-retention arrangement requires prior approval from OpenAI, and BuiltFrom does not have it. If you would rather no third party sees a document at all, do not press Find possible experience on it — you can select passages by hand instead, and nothing is sent.

Described from OpenAI’s published data-controls documentation and from our own project settings. OpenAI can change its policies, and this page can fall out of date.

“Confirmed” means you confirmed it

When BuiltFrom says a piece of experience is confirmed, it means one thing: you read it and said it was accurate. It does not mean BuiltFrom checked it with an employer, a referee, or anyone else. No such check exists, and none is planned. Anything you have not confirmed is labelled Needs confirmation and is kept out of every resume.

Removing your information

Every item has a Delete control where you see it — documents, pieces of experience, jobs and resumes can each be removed on their own.

To remove everything at once, open your library, go to Account, and choose Delete everything. That erases your documents, your experience, your jobs, your resumes and your profile, and closes your sign-in. It cannot be undone, and BuiltFrom keeps no copy afterwards.

Deleting your account here does not reach into OpenAI’s abuse-monitoring logs, which expire on their own schedule as described above.
